African Pitta ssp pulih
African Pitta (Pitta angolensis pulih), Tiwai Island, Sierra Leone
These were surprising easy to find when roosting – I had five in one night! They are much harder to locate during the day (I only heard them a couple times), and a survey at Tiwai several years ago did not detect any. The Pittas here are of the poorly known resident subspecies “pulih,” which may be nonspecific with Green-breasted Pitta.
